These beautiful flowers, sent by Matt's entire family made our room look and smell wonderful!
We stole some chocolate. They gave us these incredible Italian hazlenut chocolates every night. Well, when we saw the maid's cart, we imagined more must lurk thereupon. And YES we found many and stole significantly! We incriminate ourselves photographically below.
We were right near the famous Radio City Music Hall and the always understated Times Square. Times Square was a madhouse on the saturday evening we arrived!
Here we are on our way to Del Frisco's for some fabulous steak and soufle!
Central Park!
We went 2 days, took the camera only the second time. On the first day there was a Puerto Rican Pride day. On the second it was much less crowded. We read our beloved Atlas Shrugged book some while we were there. There was a gorgeous sunset on the way home.
We had a snack at 'Tavern on the Green'. There were beautiful light fixtures inside. We sat outside, and there was a big party near us of what appeared to be important people where people gave each other moi moi kiss kisses.
Going to the Met!
We picked the perfect day because we also got to walk down the closed off 'Museum Mile' and go into a bunch of other museums for free, including the Jewish Museum, Academy of Design, Gugenheim (only from outside), German (with weird video artist guy like Dieter der Sprockets) with performers in front of each! There was also a gorgeous sunset. When we got back we had pizza (Ray's), beer (Molson Ice) and some lousy tiramisu...
...however the next day or so we prevailed in locating this exquisitely fine tiramisu 2 blocks away. Jenn posed in this outdoor restaurant which was where you'd expect an alley to be and adored the overhead lights
Going Downtown
Matt went downtown alone to see...
Brooklyn Bridge
Yes, I walked all the way across it. Not a lot to see in Brooklyn, though the Star Wars museum exhibit was somewhere.
Financial District, Generally Cool Buildings
There are a few areas (like the orange building) where the lower tip of Manhattan resembles Boston - that is, old time buildings still stand. Tried to tour the Woolworth building, but no tourists are allowed. Likewise, the Stock Exchange allows no one into the visitor's gallery ever since 9-11.
Battery Park
From here, one can see (and go out to) Liberty and Ellis Islands. I didn't make it to either as I ran out of time before my WTC viewing time. The pictures of Lady Liberty were tough to take, as it was really overcast (moreso than you can tell with the picture) and I was far away. I used a high res mode and full zoom, then compensated for the overcast with contrast adjustments, and this is the best I could get.
This sculpture once stood in the center of the Word Trade Center complex. Its creator had 'World Unity' as its subject. It somehow survived the attack, and they placed it, only slightly repaired in Battery Park.
Ground Zero Observation Platform at/and Trinity Church
I'm sure everyone has as many questions as I had (and still have) about 'Ground Zero'. Well, the obeservation platform (basically a plywood ramp) lies next to Trinity Church, probably the oldest church on the island and is where you find Grant's tomb. I stepped in briefly, and there was a concert going on.
Along the iron fence around the church people have placed momentos. There are lots of signatures and messages especially on the platform plywood itself.
To go up to the platform, you have to get a free ticket with a designated showing time at Pier 17 8 blocks east or so of the site. They meter the groups of people as they go up the ramp so that everyone has as much time as they need at the top. Thing is, you can't really see a lot - I guess the absence of the buildings says more than anything. You're not high enough to really see the basement, and all the ruins had been cleared a week before I arrived.
This cross stands on the left. I don't know much about it other than it appeared to be the last piece of structure remaining of the tower. The stairs/entrance shown in the second picture was on the far right and was one of the only other surviving signs.
On the way back our subway happened to momentarily park me before this interesting escape tunnel! You can see me in the reflection. Jenn likes this photo.
Mama Mia!
This great musical played at the Winter Garden right across from our Hotel (51st and 7th ave)
5th Avenue
We saw 'Atlas' near Rockefeller center. Jenn inspired the shot angle for the second one. We then went to Godiva and got some candy for Jenny and Pokey, and snagged some 'samples' on the way out. Maybe that explains the expression on the gentleman inside the store. Also dropped by St Patrick's Cathedral and saw a Frescoe which Jenn believes was done by a particular artist she had heard of.
City Pictures
We took the 'building row' picture near where a man was selling purses which interested Jenn
Grand Central Station
On the way there...
...we got this nice shot of the Chrysler building. Sadly, you can't tour it. At one time you could tour the lobby but even that's closed. But wow, what a magnificent building. Tallest in the world until the Empire State, which we went up to the top of.
The Magnificent Station
Wow, It's something you just have to see. It's like visiting an age long forgotton where building such a thing was possible. Lots of posh restaurants, and some great ordinary places too. We ate at Junior's in the basement having hamburgers and egg creams. The pictures came out well only after I set the camera down and did long exposure shots. I love that Mavica camera.
Blue Fin Restaurant
We got comped some free sushi! This trendy place got great reviews and is right in the heart of times square. We ate here on our way out of town.
Misc Stuff we Liked
Here are some cool lantern lights Jenn liked, and some swanky lights Matt liked. Oh yeah, and a shot of some Guardian Angel stuff. Didn't see any Guardian Angels on our trip, though.
We loved these nuts you find on the street - especially the almonds. We could never resist the smell from the cart. I wish they had these in San Francisco!
The colors in this Healthy Food shop (near the Ed Sullivan theatre) inspired Jenn's decorative energies...
Matt thought this spike in the pavement was photogenic
Matt wants to read this book about the number Zero
Jenn loved seeing the steam that appears especially at night through manholes. We only caught this slight effusion with our camera though...
Yes, RandPaulin, it really does exist! Let's go!
We knew JohnYates would love this: We saw Chris Elliot standing outside of 'Mama Mia' (not on the night we went) during intermission, and discovered that Alan Keyes is on their news!
