Preliminary Notes
  • This procedure assumes you've got Intel gigabit controllers, which get installed and configured AFTER we completely install RedHat
  • You should have both processors installed in a dual processor motherboard during the install. I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think RedHat won't install both the SMP and UP (UniProcessor) versions unless you've got both installed.
  • On a dual ethernet motherboard, use the left ethernet jack first. This should become eth0, and the other should be eth1

  1. Boot the machine with RH7.3 Disk 1 inserted
  2. Choose the graphical install option (just press enter)
  3. Breeze through the boring setup screens until it asks you what kind of installation you want. Choose Server. If you choose workstation, you must go through a ton of extra steps that I'm not about to document.
  4. When asked, tell it to auto do the partitions for you. Set it to remove ALL partitions, and that you want to review the partitions settings by checking the checkbox
  5. Confirm the warning that all partitions are to be wiped. Understand that indeed this will zorch all data on the hard drive!
  6. Now we want to modify its automatic partition size choices a bit. Edit the entry that has / in the Mount Point column. In the dialog that comes up, set its size to 3000 (MB). Close the dialog
  7. Repeat this step with the entry that has /var in the Mount Point column (also setting its size to 3000). We do this because the Oscar install procedure has you copy a ton of stuff into a new directory under /, and by default there isn't enough room.
  8. Make lilo your default boot loader.
  9. Choose 'no firewall' on the firewall config screen
  10. Handle the language and timezone screens...
  11. Make the root password password so that everyone will know it. Also, make an additional account called admin also with password = password
  12. Add the KDE checkbox option
  13. Set your video card
  14. Go have some coffee while it doe its lengthy install
